This month the heat starts building here in the eastern Pennsylvania area. Water temps push into the 80 degrees and fishing gets a bit more challenging.

Largemouth – Hit that cover! Largemouth will be seeking brush & stumps where they can ambush with little energy. Early mornings & late afternoon/evening are best.
Smallmouth – will be heading for that deeper cooler water. Finesse plastics & jigs in 20 plus feet of water, working drop-offs and edges of weed flats. Shallow flat edges and points in early morning and late evening are good as well.

Walleye – The night belongs to the walleye angler as fish venture up closer to shallow water to feed. Working edges of week flats and sharp drop-offs where fish can feed and quickly get back to deeper water will yield some of the best opportunities
Stripers – Now that surface temps reach in the 80’s Stripers will spend most of their time below the thermocline. Big baits, Large Jerkbaits, Plugs, Mojo’s, big spoons trolled is one of my favorite tactics. Night fishing is very productive using cut bait such as shad, bunker, or even chicken livers. Keep an eye out for stripers blitzing on top, toss you favorite topwater plug in and hold on.

Trout – Some trout can still be caufght in teh cool mountain streams. Spinners, small jerkbaits, etc. Big brown trout will head for that cool deep water when they are available in local lakes. Trolling plugs & spoons can be productive especially in orange. The fly anglers still produce fish, however that is an art in itself and out of my wheelhouse!

Catfish – As summer comes into full swing, spending the night on a lake or river bank with baits out for catfish is a long time favorite. Cut shad or any baitfish works well, aslo the old school chicken livers & hot dogs! Flatheads in the river will be baited with live bluegills, but remember, these fish get huge, bring your heave gear. a 50lb plus fish is not out of possibility.

Go get one ’em! Be sure to send those pics!
