This months Pocono Fishing Report the heat continues here in the eastern Pennsylvania area. Water still hovering tin the mid/high 80’s. any water this warm will make fishing tough. Look for areas of cooler deeper water near weed flats. Places where fish can come up early morning and late evening to feed and shoot back down to cooler waters.
Largemouth –
Pretty much same as last month! Hit that cover! Largemouth will be seeking brush & stumps where they can ambush with little energy. Early mornings & late afternoon/evening are best. That topwater bite is alway a favorite this time of year, but be patient… It may take a bit to entice that lunker to come up and smack that bait, but them it does….Fish On!
Smallmouth –
Again in the summer Doldrums….Smallies are holding in that deeper cooler water. Finesse plastics & jigs in 20 plus feet of water, working dropoffs and edges of weed flats. Shallow flat edges and points in early morning and late evening are good as well. Remember Topwater work well for smallmouth as well, use this just at sunrise and again at sunset. Live bait has been producing very week after dark!
Walleye –
We have been seeing lots of walleye showing up in the shallow waters and steep drop-offs just after dark. With water temps so high, the bite is slow! Live bait has been producing best. Medium shiner on a jig head crawled across the bottom.
Stripers –
Mid Summer Stripers are one of my favorite! With no saltwater cousins in the area in any numbers, landlocked freshwater stripers are one of my favorites. Since they love the colder water, troll them like you would a salmon, use large bucktails with a paddle tail trailer, a Maja Mojo is one of my favorites, or a #1 or #2 bunker spoon! Yes this is for freshwater! Try it. Also for you bank fishing guys, large live bait, chunked shad or chicken livers work VERY well when fished from shore.
Trout –
I am seeing some folks hitting he cooler mountain creeks and getting native brook trout and even a few rainbows. great fishing if you can find the right conditions. Don’t forget to target those big Browns that have sought deeper water in the summer. Big deep lakes often hold large populations of big browns. I like to target them trolling with 4″ orange spoons. Sometimes they are down 75′ plus… its a challenge, but the rewards can pay off!
Catfish/Carp –
Always a summertime favorite, nightfishing for catfish can yield some monster fish. Flatheads are being caught more and more in the Delaware. Live Bluegills for bait have scored many 25 pound plus fish on a regular basis. Channel Cats are everywhere, even in most lakes. Chicken livers often produce severl in a short nights work, and you may even end up with a striper or two depending on the body of water.
