We had a Musky trip planned for well over a month. Tim Keebler of Fin Seeker Guide Service had a great day planned for Jim Hutchinson (The Fisherman Magazine fame) and myself. As the Sept 21 drew closer, Tim warned us of poor conditions on the river. Water was really low, moving slow and was “Gin Clear” as Tim put it. Far from ideal when hunting those Musky. Never the less, Jim & I were firm on our decision to go hint the elusive Muskellunge.
With an absolutely beautiful sunrise start to the day, we headed on the river near Riegelsville Pa. I started by throwing a very large Musky Plug, Jim started with a spinner. We fished both sides of the river for about a mile or so, then Tim made a move down river a bit. We switched up lures. I started throwing a BlueFox Vibrax, Jim was tossing a Savage Gear Rat. Appeared Jim had a follow on the rat, so we continued to present for few more miles, working up & down both sides of the shoreline with little more than a follow up.
About mid day, Tim decided to try a little further up river, however the water was so low, we needed to trailer the boat, and run up several miles via truck. We relaunched, and began to pound the shoreline again. Cast after cast, spinners, plugs, and anything else we thought may trigger a strike.
After about 9 hours and only a couple follow-up’s, Our sore shoulders told us its was not going to happen today. I have never seen a guide work so hard as Tim did to try to get us a fish. He warned us it would be difficult, but most would just say it’s a typical day of Musky fishing! It’s what makes them such a trophy, they are hard to catch, very hard.
At any rate, it was a fantastic day on the water with a couple great friends. What else could you really ask for? Yes a trophy fish would be nice, but comradery on the water with great people is invaluable. We will definately be out with Tim again to test our skills, looking forward to it….
