So it is often personal preference or is it something more? Do you fish Mono or Braid? Or maybe both depending on what you are fishing and how? What are your thoughts on each, and why would you use one or the other?

Right On! These new hybrid lines are definitely going to be a whole new world.
Depending on the day, water clarity, responsiveness of the fish, I may go right to fluoro leader, unless the extra stretch is needed on braid or mono. I never run straight braid, but almost always use it as my main line. I prefer braid for deeper running fish like striper, especially for trolling, it cuts the water column better. However, I have learned wire is the best when you need to send it way down. I know the topic was this or that, but sometimes the other is the option.
Another reason I turn to braid for shore fishing, or rocky bottom fishing is because it is more durable and more abrasion resistant. Surf fishing, shore fishing or anytime extended casting can be a necessity, or just up your game, braid is the option being smaller diameter. Of course this does not usually become an issue with stream fishing, then mono usually does the trick, but I still have that fluoro handy for those lock-jaw times.
One of the times I like using strictly mono is jig fishing lakes. I like the stretch, especially for walleye fishing with lighter jigs. There is definitely better jig action and response might be slower, but enticing them comes first!
Lastly, I always wipe my line down with a rag after a few casts, be it mono or fluoro, I find I can see these semi invisible lines pick up micro debris or organisms that reflect light, this makes the line light up in the water.
Basically, I use it all like tools on my belt. I would not be without either of them!
John, Great tips. I know fishing Lake Ontario we often pick up a load of spiny water fleas that look like slime or vegetation, but it is a micro organism that is impossible to get away from. I love braid from surf as well, you definately get more distance over mono.
Braid with fluoro or mono leader for Bass. For Trout and Panfish I go straight Stren Mono in 4lb to 6lb. Lately though for Trout I have discovered how great the Trout SOS by Lelands lures is! (Creator of the Trout magnet gem that catches everything with gills other than Trout 😂) It’s a copoly so the benefit of both types. Plenty of stretch stretch for fast moving treble lures like in lines or jerkbaits but with the fluoro coating for stealth.
I need to look into that, was talking with them at the last Harrisburg show, they are great guys.

Braid with flourocarbon or mono leader depending on fishing situation mono for floating and slower sink rate flourocarbon for strength and no stretch and low visibility fish wise
My buddy Josh Taylor made me a believer in Floro leaders. Crappie fishing a couple years ago, he was out fishing me 4/1 until I used a floro leader as well! It really makes a difference on those line shy fish!
Was always a mono guy but once i switched to braid on heavy poles wont go back.i will still use mono on ultralight set ups and for shad fishing
Yea, Shad is definately mono for me as well. I also use it on lite line techniques such as drop shotting.
braided for stripers
braid with floro leader for everything else
Yea I agree, you need that braid for the stripers, however I like Mono when I’m trolling. That extra stretch is a bit more forgiving when they make that U-turn and head straight back at you!
